Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the greatest actors of his generation. His talents have allowed him to play a wide range of characters, and he finally won his first Academy Award (after five nominations) for The Revenant in 2016 and now appears in Don’t Look Up opposite Jennifer Lawrence.
DiCaprio grew up in California, in a dangerous neighborhood. He had trouble finding friends; as he once told Parade about his childhood, “I never belonged.” After getting a few commercials as a kid, he landed a role on the sitcom Growing Pains at 17; Robert De Niro cast him in This Boy’s Life and he’s been an A-list movie star ever since.
While his movie career is one of the most esteemed on the planet, his romantic life has been, shall we say, occasionally mocked. There’s a prevailing joke that he only dates blonde models (and actresses, periodically) and a Reddit user even created a graph that presumably proves he’s never publicly dated a woman over the age of 25, even as he’s currently pushing 50. DiCaprio is also notoriously private about his private life, never mentioning girlfriends in interviews. “I liked it when you went to see a movie and you didn’t know everything about the actor,” he once said.
Perhaps that’s why everyone’s mystified by his current relationship with long-term girlfriend, model Camila Morrone. Sure, she’s also a model/actress like many of his exes–but for starters, she’s a brunette. Not only that, but their relationship has lasted a number of years and seems to be on super-solid ground.
Camila realizes people raise their eyebrows at the 23-year gap between and her superstar boyfriend. “I probably would be curious about it too,” she admitted in 2019. Still, Morrone thinks, “Anyone should be able to date who they want to date.”
She also looks forward to the day when people know her for her work and not who she’s dating. “I understand the association, but I’m confident that will continue to slip away and be less of a conversation,” she’s said.
DiCaprio is rumored to always be looking for love at the Cannes Film Festival, and that’s where he met Morrone in 2017; she was 19 at the time.
However, Morrone’s mom has dated Al Pacino, a friend of DiCaprio’s; Morrone refers to him as a stepfather. Us Weekly first wondered publicly if DiCaprio was hooking up with Morrone after they were seen at a Barney’s store in December 2017, and they’ve been together ever since.
DiCaprio has even been turned into a meme because he once took pictures for his girlfriend’s social media accounts. He was called an “Instagram boyfriend” after he was seen snapping photos of Morrone in 2019. “I saw the meme,” Morrone later told Vanity Fair. “Poor thing, he’s being called an Instagram boyfriend. He’s an environmentalist and a movie star and it doesn’t mean a thing!”
The couple went to several of the same events separately, but eventually they were photographed together, including Coachella in 2019, the Oscars in 2020 (where they sat together, but didn’t walk the red carpet together) and at an Italian market just before the start of 2021.
