During their engagement interview, William admitted he would have to “wrack his brains” to remember the first he saw his wife Kate Middleton.
But Kate perfectly remembered that moment.
She said: “I actually went bright red when I met you and scuttled off feeling very shy about meeting you. William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there from Fresher’s Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other.”
“But we did become very close friends from quite early on.”
“When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her,” William revealed. “I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there.”
During their University experience, Kate (who was a shy, dreamy girl-next-door type) walked the runway of a charity fashion show in lingerie. William, in the front row, reportedly whispered to their friend Fergus Boyd: “Wow, Fergus, Kate’s hot!”
The next year, William, Kate, and two other friends moved into an off-campus apartment. At the start, they were just friends, but William constantly tried to impress her.
“I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners,” he said. “[But] what would happen was I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire. She would be sitting in the background trying to help and basically taking control of the whole situation.”
After some months, anyway, a romance blossomed between the two. Eventually, they came clean to their fellow housemates. “I think at first they were a bit surprised that it had happened,” William admits. “Then they realized it was really nice.”
The royal couple also spoke about their brief split and explained why it was so important to their relationship.
William said: “We did split up for a bit. We were both very young, it was at university and we were both finding ourselves and being different characters and stuff.”
“It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up. It was just a bit of space. It worked out for the better.”
However, 15 years on from that brief split, things have gone from strength to strength for the couple.
After their wedding in 2011, they welcomed three beautiful children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
