The second season of the new chapter of Sex and the City, And Just Like That…, has recently premiered, but all eyes seem to be already focused on the finale that we will see in August.
Yes, because, as everyone knows by now, in the last episode of the season, we will see the highly anticipated cameo of Kim Cattrall in the role of her Samantha Jones, after her notorious absence in the first season of the revival.
As a guest on The View talk show, for the first time, the actress spoke about the topic, revealing what convinced her to return to the role of the iconic friend of the Sex and the City quartet.
Samantha’s return
As confirmed by the showrunner of the series, Michael Patrick King, Samantha’s return will be brief.
We will see her in only one scene where she will be on the phone with Carrie and it seems that she will not interact in person with any of the other main characters (it is known that there is bad blood between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker).
However, her cameo inevitably attracts attention, especially considering that the actress had previously stated that she did not want to return to the role of Samantha, a character she felt had completed her narrative arc.
And instead, as often happens in the showbiz world, things have changed. Why did Kim Cattrall change her mind? The credit goes to HBO’s boss, Casey Bloys, who decided to pick up the phone and personally call the actress.
“It’s very interesting to receive a phone call from the head of HBO saying, ‘What can we do?'” Cattrall said, before adding with a smile, “And I said, ‘Hmmm… let me be creative.'”
The first condition that Kim Cattrall set for the HBO executive was the return of the iconic costume designer of Sex and the City, Patricia Field (who is currently working on another series by Sex and the City co-creator Darren Star, Emily in Paris).
The actress who plays Samantha wanted her character to be dressed by Field for her brief, single scene in And Just Like That… “I just thought if I was going to come back, I had to come back with that kind of Samantha style. I had to push it. And we did,” Cattrall concluded.
