Played by a 9-year-old Mara Wilson, book-lover Matilda Wormwood was so smart, she could use telekinesis to thwart the villains around her.
While Mara Wilson, now 34, was also well-known for her roles in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Miracle On 34th Street (1994), the child-star quitted acting as she entered her teens.
Type-casted into the “cute” category, Wilson tired of playing the same character. “I appreciate the word cute in its own way, but when I was young and cute, I felt like I was being reduced to that, I felt like it was out of my control,” she told an Australian news channel.
As it turns out, Wilson has taken some Matilda with her over the years.
In 2009, she graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and wrote a book, Where Am I Now?: True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame, which came out in September 2016. Beyond Matilda’s intelligence, Wilson also resembles her younger self — there isn’t crazy shock value there.
