Sandra Bullock’s Deep Aversion To Marriage

"I don't need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother."

Speaking on Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk with cohosts Willow Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris, Sandra Bullock got real about her past relationships and her thoughts on the institution of marriage.

She said that her own experience with divorce made her feel like marriage isn’t synonymous with a lifetime of love. “I am someone who went through the divorce process,” Bullock said. “I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children—three children, his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever.”

She added, “I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother.”

Bullock also said that she doesn’t want to feel subject to gender-based societal obligations in a marriage.

“I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man,” she continued. “So if that’s what you have, think about what kind of parent he would be. Think about what kind of parent you would be. And what if something happened? Would you both be great parents to those children even if you didn’t make it as a couple? Think about the children first.”

After a nearly five-year marriage, in 2010 Bullock filed for divorce from ex-husband Jesse James. She is currently dating Los Angeles–based photographer and model Bryan Randall. The two have been together since 2015.
